Messy Room
Whosever room this is should be ashamed!
His underwear is hanging on the lamp.
His raincoat is there in the overstuffed chair,
And the chair is becoming quite mucky and damp.
His workbook is wedged in the window,
His sweater's been thrown on the floor.
His scarf and one ski are beneath the TV,
And his pants have been carelessly hung on the door.
His books are all jammed in the closet,
His vest has been left in the hall.
A lizard named Ed is asleep in his bed,
And his smelly old sock has been stuck to the wall.
Whosever room this is should be ashamed!
Donald or Robert or Willie or--
Huh? You say it's mine? Oh, dear,
I knew it looked familiar!

The main parts of the figurative language used in this poem is mainly hyperbole and personification. (the 5 basic parts of figurative language is hyperbole, metaphors, personification, simile and symbolism) Hyperboles are used in this poem to exaggerate the things that are thrown everywhere in the room, to emphasize the very messy state of the room. Personification is used to make the poem more exciting.
For example, "Oh, dear"is one of the figurative language used in the poem. It is a hyperbole, which is part of the figurative language. It is used to show the shock after realizing that the room he was commenting on was his own room.
Also, another example would be "A lizard named Ed". This is part of the figurative language, as it is personification. The lizard could not possibly have a name, unless it is a pet. However, in this case, it seems like the lizard is there, due to the dirty, unhygienic and messy state of the room. Thus, if the lizard has a name, the author is trying to make the lizard look as though it is a real person, having a real name. This would make readers think harder, and also get more interested in the poem.
This is the end of the post. Thank you
PS:hope you enjoyed the poem!:D
